Speaker Series
Dr. Matthew Spalding – Hillsdale College Professor of Constitutional Government and Author of The Making of the American Mind: The Story of Our Declaration of Independence

Dr. Matthew Spalding is the Kirby Professor in Constitutional Government and Dean of the Van Andel Graduate School of Government at Hillsdale College and oversees the Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship at Hillsdale’s Washington, D.C. campus. His new book, The Making of the American Mind: The Story of Our Declaration of Independence, was released in December 2025.
Dr. Spalding is also the best-selling author of We Still Hold These Truths: Rediscovering Our Principles, Reclaiming Our Future and the original executive editor of The Heritage Guide to the Constitution, the first line-by-line analysis of each clause of the U.S. Constitution.
Appointed executive director of the President’s Advisory 1776 Commission, which produced The 1776 Report, he is currently a senior academic advisor for America250 projects. Prior to joining Hillsdale, Spalding was vice president for American Studies at The Heritage Foundation and founding director of its B. Kenneth Simon Center for Principles and Politics. He is a senior fellow at the Claremont Institute for the Study of Statesmanship and Political Philosophy and serves on the boards of The Steamboat Institute, Faith & Law, the James Wilson Institute, and New College of Florida. He received his BA from Claremont McKenna College and his MA and PhD from the Claremont Graduate School.
Jake Tawney – Director of Curriculum at the Institute for Catholic Liberal Education

Jake Tawney is the Director of Curriculum at the Institute for Catholic Liberal Education. He previous served as the Chief Academic Officer for Great Hearts Academies and taught mathematics and computer science at Upper Arlington High School and the philosophy of math-ematics and Euclid at Pontifical College Josephinum.
Mr. Tawney has authored a primer on teaching high school geometry through Euclid (Cana Academy) and Another Sort of Mathematics (Encounter Books).
He is the proud husband of Christina Tawney and the proud father of eight children, all of whom have something unique in their souls that can only be satisfied by wondering about mathematics. He and his family reside in Phoenix, AZ.
School Day Visits
Select Tuesdays – 7:45 – 9:45 am
During School Day Information Sessions, we welcome visitors who are interested in learning more about classical education. Registered visitors will attend Morning Assembly, meet with our Head of School, receive a presentation on classical education, observe classrooms, and tour our campus.
Registration is required, and visitors must arrive and sign in at the main office.
During the summer break, we welcome prospective families and visitors on select Tuesdays at 12:00 PM for an opportunity to learn more about the school. Registration is required, and all visitors should arrive and sign in at the main office. Following check-in, guests will join Mr. Gibson. our Head of School, for a small-group informational session and Q&A. The visit will conclude with a guided tour of the campus from someone in our admissions department.
Individual Tours (Abbreviated Visit)
Schedule a visit to CCA for just your family. You’ll be led on a brief tour of campus by someone in our admissions department. We will cover standard information, or you can spend the time asking all of your most important questions. Space is limited.
Patriot for a Day
Allow your child to experience CCA as they shadow a current student for the day.
Becoming a Patriot for a day allows your child to encounter the school community and better help determine if CCA is the right fit for your family. To register your child for Patriot for a Day, email admissions@columbusclassical.org.
We require all families to attend a School Day Visit or Individual Tour prior to registering their child for a Patriot for a Day. (Currently available for children in grades 1-10.)
One Wednesday per month, 6:00 – 7:30pm
Join us for a small group information session and tour of our campus during our popular evening events. Registered visitors will meet with our Head of School for a small group information session, ask questions during Q&A, as well as receive a tour of our school.
