“Art is the signature of man”

When I walk the halls of the school with guests, they always stop and stare at the art you have created.  They marvel at its beauty; they comment on its design; they are stunned by its excellence; and they often ask if they can take a course with Mrs. Blecke.  But if I took a dog for a walk through our school; if a bird flew down the halls; if an ape spent a day roaming freely about the building, none of them would stop and marvel; and none would make their own art to hang upon the walls.

So, what are we to make of this?

Our good friend G.K. Chesterton said: “It is the simple truth that man does differ from the brutes in kind and not in degree; and the proof of it is here; that it sounds like a truism to say that the most primitive man drew a picture of a monkey and that it sounds like a joke to say that the most intelligent monkey drew a picture of a man. Something of division and disproportion has appeared; and it is unique. Art is the signature of man.”

Whatever else we may say about art, we can say this: We do it, because we’re human.

Have a wonderful day.
