An adult brain weighs approximately 3 pounds and is about the size of a grapefruit. However, beginning in our mid-30’s to mid-40’s, our brains actually begin to get smaller as we age.
In addition, the male brain is, on average, about 10-15% larger than the female brain.
So, naturally, young men—especially you high school boys—you may think that the logical conclusion is that you’re among the smartest people in the room. After all, your brain may well be bigger than that of the females as well as that of the adults over the age of 35.
But I’m afraid that kind of thinking would only prove that you’re not so bright after all.
It turns out, fellas, that the physical size of your brain does not determine intelligence. Otherwise, on that thinking, the sperm whale would be smarter than all of us: It has the biggest brain of any animal, weighing about 20 pounds.
