Today is Constitution Day — a time to remember one of the most important moments in American history. The U.S. Constitution was written in 1787, over 230 years ago! It begins with three powerful words: “We the People.” That means the government is created by us — and it exists to protect our rights and freedoms.
The Constitution sets the rules for how our country works — like how laws are made, how leaders are chosen, and the just treatment of individuals. It has inspired many other nations, like India, South Africa, and Germany, to write their own constitutions.
And here’s something amazing: it’s the oldest written constitution still in use today — even while other governments have changed or failed.
When the Constitution was signed, bells rang out across Philadelphia to celebrate that day. Today, many across our country still ring bells each year to honor that moment.
