Well, Happy Quitter’s Day. One New Year’s resolution I plan to keep is to stop talking about New Year’s resolutions after today. But one more thought, before we leave the subject.
Whatever we have resolved for the new year, whatever we imagine our year will hold, the one guarantee is that things won’t go exactly according to our plan. That’s why so many people end up honoring Quitter’s Day, whether they want to or not. The writer of Proverbs puts it plainly: “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails”.
And so, perhaps more than any resolution we can make about what we plan to do in the New year, we would do well to imitate Christina Rossetti’s posture in her poem, Old and New Year Ditties:
New Year coming on apace
What have you to give me?
Bring you scathe, or bring you grace,
Face me with an honest face;
You shall not deceive me:
Be it good or ill, be it what you will,
It needs shall help me on my road,
My rugged way to heaven, please God.
Have a wonderful day.
